But here God didn’t come.

Last autumn I played on my dear colleague Justin Harbaugh‘s DMA recital at the University of Kansas. For this recital, he commissioned a piece by the composer Ben Justis, who just completed his DMA studies at KU as well. I enjoyed working on this new work more than any other contemporary work I have played. His writing is intuitive, the subject material is compelling, and the play between instruments is really fun. If you haven’t read Art Spiegelman’s MAUS, do it. It’s difficult at times, but always relevant. Ben chose to write this trio based on that graphic novel. Heavy stuff, but we had a heck of a time learning it. Here is the video from the inaugural performance. Recording coming soon. Enjoy!
